My Philosophy

National Rescue Award
Swimming Teachers and Coaches
My name is Irene and I had to work
hard to conquer a lifelong fear of water in order to learn to swim.
I had this fear of water all my life owing to childhood incidents. Through
the patience of my teacher I was able to conquer to initial fear of water,
now being able to swim very well. I joined my local swimming club, Masters,
a couple of years ago. Last year I came second in my age group while
swimming one mile freestyle against the clock for the Bridge to Bridge
Challenge.
I first met Gay, (SwimWithUs) who had
completed her teaching certificate the year before, during swimming lessons in
my local pool and she was going through a specialised program of swimming that
concentrates on balance in the water. I
was so impressed with the fluidity and ease with which she swam and drilled that
I wanted to know what she was doing.
After a detailed explanation and a period of
time of us both being in the water and helping each other, I was able to improve
my stroke. We became friends and discovered we both had a deep seated fear of
water, this made it possible for us to understand each others problems. I
also then went on to take the specialised course that Gay had taken and
subsequently perfected my technique.
We both desire to help others with the phobic feelings they have towards being
in the water.
More about me: Divorced with 3 children, I moved to Swadlincote 6 years ago and
love it here. When I lived in Essex I ran my own interior design business. I was
successful but decided to change course and now I draw fine portraits of people
and their pets.
When I go back to Essex to see my family I teach my 12 year old grandson to
swim, he is getting very good!.........so watch this space!.........possibly a
budding Ian Thorpe!
